OCTOBER T-SHIRT
‘Momiji’ is the Japanese word for the red maple leaves prominent throughout Japan during the change of seasons in to Autumn. Last year I spent the majority of October and November exploring the country and seeing these beautiful colours, eating momiji tempura (fried maple leaves in batter), and being in awe of natures changes.
This design is inspired by that time, with an excerpt from a poem by Clive James called ‘Japanese Maple’.
a short project summary: in 2024 I’m creating one tee design a month, a single print run, giving me chance to experiment with lettering and illustration for clothing. 5% of profits will go to 12 different charities over the year. Each month, I’ll be celebrating a (visually) creative artist from the UK alongside the launch.
This month’s artist is Ben Craven.
If you haven’t seen Ben’s work yet, you can find it in a myriad of places and on a range of products, from socks and tote bags to chalk bags and climbing mats. He’s known for his large scale mural work and has over a decade of experience painting his iconic colourful pieces. Ben lives and works in Leeds and has clients such as Apple, Brancott Estate and Hayward Gallery. His work is stocked in London, Madrid and Paris, or you can purchase directly from his online shop. Check out his work here @benjamincraven_ it’s so fab!
What are 3 things you enjoy spending your life doing?
“My number one is music, have it on all day everyday, what keeps me going!
Second would be creating, this can be any form of creating; art, cooking, photography etc
Third would have to be ‘switching off’, this could be anything from traveling, experiencing new places, climbing, playing games or socialising with friends. This is v important!”
What do you do as an artist?
I design, paint and create a bunch of different products/projects. I get itchy feet so end up dipping my toes into a bunch of different things! Murals have been a big part of my journey and I really want to continue to push and go bigger with em. I try to be as playful and versatile as I can when it comes to creating, it keeps things fun and fresh!”
